Christmas Classic Short Stories

December 14-18, 2009
1-4pm

Each day we will focus on a different short story by a classic author that is in tune with the season. Subject areas to be covered this week are literature, poetry, history, compostion, art, art appreciation, music and possibly health and nutrition. At the end of the week, children will have a notebook to share with relatives over the holidays.

Parents do not have to stay during the class. As a matter of fact, with all the other stuff you have to do this week before Christmas, I encourage you to go and get it done. Even if you just need to go back to your house and take a bubble bath. That's fine.

Cost will be $15 per day or $60 for the week per child.
If you are a CHESS member, the cost will be $10 per day or $40 for the week per child.
Fee includes all materials and a small snack each day (please let me know of any allergies ahead of time).

Space is limited. A $10 nonrefundable deposit will be required to hold your space when you RSVP.

Possible authors
Louisa May Alcott
Leo Tolstoy
O Henry
Laura Ingalls Wilder
Robert Frost

The Nativity Through Fine Art

I know from previous experience that when it gets close to Christmas, my enthusiasm for getting lessons in wanes. As an effort to keep things fresh, in sync with the season, and helpful to others, I am offering to take your kids ages 8 and up for a whole week and do "lessons" with them.

We will study the Nativity through the Bible and fine art. Subject areas to be covered this week are art, art appreciation, language arts (literature and composition), music, and history. We will also view segments of The Nativity Story as part of our study. At the end of the week, children will have a notebook filled with beautiful art to share with relatives over the holidays.

This class will be held at my house in Littlestown and will be from 1pm to 4pm on December 15-19, 2008.
NOTE: If there is enough interest, I will offer this class during the morning hours (9am to Noon) as well.

Parents do not have to stay during the class. As a matter of fact, with all the other stuff you have to do this week before Christmas, I encourage you to go and get it done. Even if you just need to go back to your house and take a bubble bath. That's fine.

Geography Club

Geography Club
Come and explore the world beginning Tuesday, October 7; 1-2:30

The Geography Club will meet once a month and explore the world through activities that focus on the 5 themes of geography - location, place, human-environmental interactions, movement and regions.

A long term goal is to get registered for the National Geographic Bee that takes place annually. At first, we will keep the club on a local level. After a year or two, we will register for the National Bee and compete on regional and state levels.

Activities and lessons come from the National Council for Geographic Education.

All meetings will be at my house in Littlestown. If there is enough interest, I will look for a bigger location in the area.

Meeting times are 1 - 2:30 and the dates are as follows:

October 7
November 4
December 2
January 6
February 3
March 3
April 7
May 5

This club is for students in grades 3 to 5 (maybe 6). Meetings will take place once a month and there will be minimal homework involved with the club.

Our club will be asking for donations of atlases, maps (state, US and world) and world almanacs.

Fees:
*CHESS members - $2 per child per meeting
Non *CHESS members - $4 per child per meeting

If you are interested in joining the Geography Club, please let me know by September 30 so I can be sure to have enough supplies on hand and so I can give you details like what to bring to meetings.
